Victoza (liraglutide), a new treatment for type-2 diabetes, has become associated with severe, life-threatening side effects. According to the FDA, Victoza treatment may increase a patient’s risk of pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and kidney failure. Due to the severity of these complications, people who were injured may benefit from joining a Victoza class action lawsuit.

FDA Safety Warning for Victoza and Pancreatic Cancer
In March 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Drug Safety Communication for all diabetes drugs in the incretin mimetic class, including Victoza, after a study published in Diabetes linked these drugs to pre-cancerous pancreatic cellular changes that could potentially cause pancreatic cancer. This study corroborates evidence from clinical trials in which Victoza was linked to an increased risk of pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation), a known risk-factor for pancreatic cancer.
FDA Victoza Warning for Thyroid Cancer
According to an FDA warning on June 13, 2011, liraglutide, Victoza’s active ingredient, causes dose-dependent and treatment-duration-dependent thyroid C-cell tumors at clinically relevant exposures in both genders of rats and mice. Additionally, in clinical trials studying Victoza, there were more cases of pancreatitis in patients treated with Victoza than in patients treated with comparators. Therefore, if you have been injured by this drug, a Victoza Class Action may help you receive compensation for the suffering you have recently endured.
Victoza Class Action Lawsuit Overview
Victoza (generic: liraglutide) was developed by Novo Nordisk and approved by the FDA in 2010 to improve blood-sugar control in people with type-2 diabetes. A once-daily injection of Victoza increases insulin production, reduces blood-sugar levels, and curbs appetite to help with weight-loss.
“Diabetes is a leading cause of death and disability, with more than 1.5 million new cases diagnosed annually,” said Mary Parks, M.D., director, Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Controlling blood sugar levels is very important to preventing or reducing the long term complications of diabetes, and Victoza offers certain patients with type 2 diabetes a treatment option for controlling their blood glucose levels.”
Unfortunately, it has come to the attention of regulatory authorities that Victoza may share a casual relationship with the development of several adverse health complications. Public Citizen, the Washington, D.C.-based consumer advocacy group, has therefore petitioned the FDA to immediately remove the type 2 diabetes drug from the market. Victoza may put patients at risk of the following side effects:
- Pancreatic cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Renal failure
- Severe allergic reactions
“More and more people are taking this drug, and more people are experiencing serious health problems as a result,” Public Citizen director Sidney Wolfe, MD, said in a statement. “Clearly, the FDA’s warning system is not sufficient. The drug should be taken off the market.”
If you are one of the many people that have been injured by this drug, filing a lawsuit or joining a class action against Novo Nordisk may entitle you to compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost income, permanent injuries, loss of a loved one, and more.
