Victoza, a relatively new treatment method for those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, has recently become a subject of increasing concern within the medical community. Subsequently, this once popular blood sugar medicine has become synonymous with several adverse health effects. According to reports, Victoza treatment may increase a patient’s risk of developing thyroid cancer, pancreatitis and kidney failure. Due to the rate and severity in which these complications may arise, those that have been injured by this medication may benefit from a Victoza class action lawsuit. In filing for litigation, victims may become eligible to receive compensation for their injuries.

Victoza Class Action Lawsuit Overview
Released on January, 25, 2010 by Novo Nordisk, Victoza was simultaneously approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Upon being introduced to interstate commerce, the type 2 diabetes medication was indicated to assist in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Daily administration of this product enables a patient to not only create more insulin, but to use it in a more efficient manor. Accordingly, increased insulin production helps regulate unbalanced blood sugar levels.
“Diabetes is a leading cause of death and disability, with more than 1.5 million new cases diagnosed annually,” said Mary Parks, M.D., director, Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Controlling blood sugar levels is very important to preventing or reducing the long term complications of diabetes, and Victoza offers certain patients with type 2 diabetes a treatment option for controlling their blood glucose levels.”
Unfortunately, it has come to the attention of regulatory authorities that Victoza may share a casual relationship with the development of several adverse health complications. Public Citizen, the Washington, D.C.-based consumer advocacy group, has therefore petitioned the FDA to immediately remove the type 2 diabetes drug from the market. According to the April 20, 2012 petition, the injectable medication puts patients at risk of the following:
- Thyroid cancer
- Renal failure
- Severe allergic reactions
“More and more people are taking this drug, and more people are experiencing serious health problems as a result,” Public Citizen director Sidney Wolfe, MD, said in a statement. “Clearly, the FDA’s warning system is not sufficient. The drug should be taken off the market.”
“Because only an estimated 10% of cases are reported, potentially as many as 2,000 patients or more have suffered a painful and serious outcome as a result of taking Victoza,” according to the statement from Public Citizen. Therefore, the rate and severity in which these complications can occur may result in a Victoza class action lawsuit. If you are one of the many people that have been injured by this drug, filing for litigation against Novo Npordisk may entitle you to compensation.
FDA Victoza Warning
According to an FDA warning on June 13, 2011, liraglutide, Victoza’s active ingredient, causes dose-dependent and treatment-duration-dependent thyroid C-cell tumors at clinically relevant exposures in both genders of rats and mice. Additionally, in clinical trials studying Victoza, there were more cases of pancreatitis in patients treated with Victoza than in patients treated with comparators. Therefore, if you have been injured by this drug, a Victoza Class Action may help you receive compensation for the suffering you have recently endured.
